Saraburi Leads the Way in Low-Carbon Cement Production

Thai cement sector advances sustainability with support from international partners and green funding.

The Thai Cement Manufacturers Association (TCMA) has introduced the ‘Saraburi Sandbox,’ a pilot project promoting low-carbon practices in the cement and concrete industry. Backed by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), this initiative represents Thailand’s first regional effort to reduce carbon emissions in Saraburi, the country’s largest cement production hub.

The project is a collaboration between the Thai and Canadian governments, UNIDO, and the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA). It aligns with Thailand’s commitment to sustainability, as outlined in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Roadmap.

Dr. Chana Poomee, TCMA Chairman, emphasised the cement industry’s 7.7% contribution to Thailand’s GDP, supporting critical infrastructure and development. TCMA has set a goal to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 and revealed its roadmap at COP27 in 2022. The Saraburi Sandbox is part of this plan, combining public, private, and community efforts to drive sustainable innovation and develop green technologies.

In its first year, the project has reduced emissions through international cooperation, advanced technologies funded by the ECCC, and strong policy backing. Stakeholders, including TCMA members and international partners, are working to align with Thailand’s goals for carbon neutrality.

Dr. Chana expressed appreciation for the support of both governments and the green funding. He noted that the project not only advances Thailand’s climate goals but also offers a model for knowledge-sharing across ASEAN and beyond.

This initiative highlights the cement industry’s role in integrating economic progress with environmental sustainability, setting an example for the region.
