Bangkok is glowing brighter than usual this week as the city kicks off nationwide celebrations for Her Majesty Queen Suthida’s birthday. From June 2 to 4, seven major bridges across the Chao Phraya River will be illuminated in regal purple, offering residents and visitors a stunning nighttime view in honor of the Queen’s big day tomorrow on Tuesday, June 3.
The lighting schedule, according to the Department of Rural Roads (DRR), runs from 7 PM to 10 PM on June 2 and 4, and until midnight on June 3 — the Queen’s actual birthday. Participating bridges include familiar city landmarks like Memorial Bridge, King Taksin Bridge, Phra Pok Klao Bridge, and the elegant Bhumibol 1 and 2 spans.
“Every year, we look forward to seeing the bridges light up,” said a local vendor. “It’s more than just lights. It reminds us of unity and respect for the Royal Family. My kids love seeing the river glow at night.”
A City Comes Together
Alongside the bridge illuminations, the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) announced toll-free travel on three major expressways throughout June 3. From midnight to midnight, drivers can enjoy free passage on the Chalerm Maha Nakhon, Si Rat, and Udon Ratthaya Expressways — a gesture meant to ease travel for those joining family or visiting temples in honor of the Queen.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of the Royal Household has confirmed the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew will be closed to the public on Tuesday to accommodate official ceremonies.

Royal Roots and National Pride
Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, born June 3, 1978, in Hat Yai, previously served as a flight attendant and later rose through the ranks of the Royal Thai Army before marrying His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn in 2019. Since then, she has earned a reputation for her composed presence at royal events and steady engagement in charitable initiatives.
For many Thais, this day isn’t just about tradition — it’s about connection.
A Festive Mood, Despite Rain Clouds
While the city beams with celebration, weather forecasts for Bangkok predict scattered showers this week. Tuesday’s expected highs hover around 33°C, with a chance of rain in the afternoon. Still, locals are not letting a little rain dampen their spirits.
What’s Next
Bangkok’s celebration is part of a broader national tribute, with provinces across Thailand also organizing ceremonies, donation drives, and cultural performances. As the lights fade by midweek, officials hint more royal-themed exhibitions and public art displays are planned throughout June.
