HAPI Awards Recognise Innovative Solutions for Aging Societies

Countries in Southeast and East Asia are experiencing rapid demographic shifts as aging populations grow. The Healthy Aging Prize for Asian Innovation (HAPI) recognises outstanding initiatives that tackle these challenges through creative solutions. Organised by the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) under Japan’s Asia Health and Wellbeing Initiative (AHWIN), the awards highlight achievements in Technology & Innovation, Community-Based Initiatives, and Supporting Self-Reliance.

Innovative Technology for Everyday Problems

Adapting existing technology can lead to simple yet effective solutions. ORANGE LINKS, a HAPI Grand Prize recipient, developed QR code nail stickers to assist individuals with dementia. These stickers provide essential identification details, helping reunite those who wander with their families or caregivers. The initiative demonstrates how accessible technology can enhance safety and independence.

Revolutionising Healthcare in Rural Japan

On Osaki Shimojima Island, an aging population faces unique healthcare challenges. Nurse & Craft, another HAPI Grand Prize winner, launched “Home Nursing to Regenerate the Town.” The programme combines home visits, telemedicine, and social engagement to combat loneliness while delivering essential care. Local seniors actively participate by preparing meals for healthcare workers, creating a sense of purpose and connection within the community.

Community-Driven Elderly Care in the Philippines

Padyarescue Inc.’s Go Bike Project in the Philippines mobilises over 1,200 young volunteers to check on seniors in disaster-prone areas. More than 37,000 people have benefited from this initiative. Edren Llanillo, Executive Director of Padyarescue, credits its success to strong community involvement. Volunteers not only provide health monitoring but also develop leadership skills that help sustain the programme.

Digital Empowerment for Seniors in Thailand

HAPI

Chiang Mai University’s School of Lifelong Education is equipping seniors with digital skills through the MEDEE programme. This initiative blends online courses with hands-on training, enabling older adults to navigate the digital economy. Associate Professor Tim Nuttee Suree emphasises the importance of tailoring courses to meet seniors’ needs, ensuring they gain practical skills for everyday use.

Shaping a Future for Aging Societies

From rural healthcare innovations in Japan to cycling-based elderly care in the Philippines and digital literacy programmes in Thailand, the HAPI awards celebrate diverse approaches to aging. These initiatives integrate technology, community participation, and intergenerational collaboration to support aging populations.
