Thailand’s Ministry of Culture has welcomed a new sneaker design by Nike inspired by som tam, calling it a sign of the country’s growing cultural influence on the global stage.
The Nike Dunk Low “Som Tum” incorporates elements drawn from the popular Thai dish, translating everyday cultural references into a contemporary fashion product. The design features an orange, green, and white color palette representing papaya and bird’s eye chili.
Additional details include a mortar-and-pestle motif, woven-style materials resembling sticky rice baskets, Thai-style embroidery spelling “Nike,” and graphics inspired by jasmine rice packaging.
Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaised said the release reflects how Thai identity can be adapted into international products.
“This phenomenon shows that Thai culture is not confined to Thailand. It can be developed further on the international stage and generate added value in new dimensions, including the creative economy and the fashion industry,” she said.
